Understanding Maladaptive Behaviors
Finding the "why" behind the action.
Maladaptive behaviors are actions that interfere with learning, communication, or social interaction. These might include tantrums, aggression, self-injury, or noncompliance.
We Don't Label "Bad"
In ABA therapy, we don’t label these behaviors as "bad" — instead, we ask why they occur. Every behavior serves a purpose. It might help the child get attention, avoid a task, or express frustration.
Finding the Function
A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) uses a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) to identify the reason (function) behind the behavior.
Example Scenario
If a child screams to avoid a difficult task, we teach them to ask for a break instead. When the child uses the new skill successfully, we reinforce it.
Over time, the new behavior replaces the maladaptive one. The key to success is consistency across all settings.
